US business data at a glance

A nationwide view of business records, active companies and credit performance, with individual profiles for every state.

US Business Data Overview

As of October 31, 2026, Creditsafe's database contained 122,321,110 business records across the 50 US states, including 81,959,171 classified as active. The national average Creditsafe credit score supplied in the dataset is 51.76 out of 100, and the national average payment delay is 1.94 days beyond terms. Higher credit scores indicate lower predicted credit risk; fewer days beyond terms indicate faster payment relative to agreed terms. These figures describe Creditsafe's database, not an official census of all registered businesses.

What the latest US business data means for your business

The latest Creditsafe data reveals important differences in business credit risk, payment behaviour and market size across the United States. Here are five findings to help business owners and credit professionals make more informed decisions.

01

A strong credit score does not always mean faster payments

The latest Creditsafe data shows that Maryland has an average business credit score of 54.48, above the national benchmark of 51.76. Yet businesses in the state average 2.68 days beyond payment terms, compared with 1.94 days nationally.

What this means for your business: Assess creditworthiness and payment behaviour separately. A customer may have a relatively strong credit profile but still create pressure on your cash flow.

02

America's largest business markets have different risk profiles

Florida leads with 13.3 million business records, followed by California with 12.7 million and Texas with 9.1 million. Their average credit scores differ: 52.32 in Florida, 48.30 in California and 51.04 in Texas. Texas also has longer average payment delays (2.35 days) than Florida (2.02) or California (1.83).

What this means for your business: A large business population can signal opportunity, but market size alone should not determine your expansion strategy or credit policy.

03

Payment delays vary significantly across the US

New Jersey averages 3.20 days beyond terms, compared with just 0.81 days in Alaska, a difference of 2.39 days. Mississippi (3.15) and Georgia (2.97) also show relatively long average payment delays.

What this means for your business: Geographic payment patterns can inform cash-flow planning and collections priorities, while individual customer payment histories should drive account-level decisions.

04

State averages can hide risks and opportunities

Vermont has the highest average business credit score at 55.26, while Nevada has the lowest at 46.12, a difference of 9.14 points. Neither average tells you whether a particular customer is creditworthy.

What this means for your business: Use state-level data to understand the wider market, then examine individual company reports before setting credit limits, agreeing payment terms or rejecting opportunities.

05

Business opportunity and credit risk need to be evaluated together

The latest Creditsafe data contains more than 82.0 million records classified as active across the 50 states. These businesses represent a substantial population to research, but an active database record does not establish that a company is currently trading, financially stable or a suitable customer.

What this means for your business: Combine market research with company-level credit intelligence to identify potential customers while managing the risk of non-payment.

What the state comparisons reveal

Credit risk varies across state averages

Vermont, Minnesota, Kansas have the highest average Creditsafe scores in this snapshot, while Nevada, Colorado, Oregon have the lowest. A state average is a useful benchmark, but company-level credit checks remain essential before making a trading decision.

Payment delays do not always mirror credit scores

Alaska, Montana, Hawaii show the shortest average payment delays; New Jersey, Mississippi, Georgia show the longest. Days beyond terms measures payment timing, while a credit score estimates future credit risk, so the indicators answer different questions.

Business volume is not business health

Florida, California, Texas have the largest number of business records. Higher business counts reflect database coverage and market scale; they should not be interpreted as evidence that companies in those states are safer trading partners.

Use state insights to inform, not replace, due diligence

State-level figures are a starting point for market research, supplier checks and credit-control planning. A Creditsafe business credit report provides the individual company view, including available payment and risk information.

About this Creditsafe data

What is an active business?

Creditsafe classifies a business as active when a qualifying update has been recorded within the previous two years. This can include company details, industry classification, annual sales, employee numbers, payment data or legal filings. It indicates recent data activity, not necessarily confirmation that a company is currently trading.

How to interpret the credit score

Creditsafe's US business credit score ranges from 1 to 100. Higher scores indicate lower predicted risk of serious payment delinquency or bankruptcy over the following 12 months. State scores are averages and should not be used as a substitute for an individual company report.

Source: Creditsafe US state dataset, snapshot October 31, 2026; refresh frequency indicated as monthly. National credit score and payment-delay benchmarks come from the supplied US aggregate row; 50-state record totals are sums of individual state rows, excluding Washington, DC and territories. Payment metrics may reflect differences in reporting coverage and business mix. Suggested state URLs are placeholders pending confirmation of live AEM page paths.
